ABNR Wins Big at ALB Indonesia Law Awards 2019

ABNR Counsellors at Law has emerged as one of the top winners at the annual ALB Indonesia Law Awards, which were presented last night (Oct 10) at a gala event in the Grand Hyatt Jakarta.

ABNR received a total of four awards in the prestigious law-firm and individual-lawyer categories, with senior ABNR partner and Management Committee member Mr. Emir Nurmansyah taking the trophy for “Deal Maker of the Year” for the second year in a row, and Mr. Giffy Pardede recognized as “Young Lawyer of the Year.”

The ALB Indonesia Law Awards recognizes the country’s best law firms, legal work and lawyers. It is one of only two awards programs that are specifically focused on Indonesia and the only program of its kind that is judged by jurors who are leading Indonesian lawyers and market players.

ABNR’s awards this year are as follows:

  • Restructuring and Insolvency Law Firm or the Year
  • Shipping Law Firm of the Year
  • Deal Maker of the Year: Emir Nurmansyah
  • Young Lawyer of the Year: Giffy Pardede

Commenting on the awards for the firm’s restructuring & Insolvency and shipping practices, ABNR Management Committee member Emir Nurmansyah said that he saw them as accurately reflecting ABNR’s position in the market in these practice areas. “In reality, we have been involved in just about every major debt restructuring process in Indonesia over at least the last 10-15 years. We also believe that our shipping practice is second to none for vessel financing and shipping litigation.” He added that ABNR’s project finance team was currently handling a number of big-ticket infrastructure projects for both public- and private-sector port operators.

Another senior ABNR partner and Management Committee member, Mr. Nafis Adwani, said that it was very encouraging to see Emir recognized as “Deal Maker of the Year” for the second year in a row. “Emir is one of the most versatile and hard-working lawyers in the country today, with a practice that focuses on some of the most complex and specialized legal fields in Indonesia, such as project finance, restructuring & insolvency and aviation. He’s willing to burn the midnight oil, and is always on call to respond to clients’ queries.”

Nafis said that Giffy was also a very worthy winner of the “Young Lawyer of the Year” award. “Giffy is definitely a rising star at ABNR. He has worked on some of our most complex matters over the last number of years, like the recently closed USD 1.846-billion “Trustee Borrowing Scheme Financing” provided to PT Pertamina EP Cepu by a consortium of domestic state-owned banks and international lenders for the development of the Jambaran-Tiung Biru gas project. The fact that this consisted of both conventional and Shariah facilities made it particularly challenging.”

Meanwhile, Mr. Agus Deradjat, the third member of the ABNR Management Committee, commented: “I would just like to congratulate all of our lawyers and staff who played a part in bringing these awards home to ABNR. We are a close-knit family, where the success of one is the success of all. Recognition like this makes all the late nights and hard work worthwhile.”

These latest accolades for ABNR come hot on the heels of the firm’s success in the 2019 iteration of the prestigious Asia Business Law Journal Indonesia Law Firm Awards, which saw ABNR take awards in the following categories: Best Overall Law Firms; Aviation; Banking & Finance; Competition & Antitrust; Corporate & Commercial; Energy Projects & Infrastructure; M&A; PE & VC; Real Estate; Restructuring, Financing & Insolvency; Shipping & Maritime; and Structured Finance & Securitization.

The ALB Indonesia Law Awards are presented annually by Asian Legal Business, a Thomson Reuters publication based in Singapore that is one of the most widely read legal journals in Southeast and East Asia.
